The week before our OC, unbeknownst to us, one of the editor’s at Daily Candy saw a Twitter post about our program. She reached out to us last Friday and requested that we reserve two afternoon time slots for her readers. Camilla and I (along with the rest of the fashionably minded population of Manhattan) have been avid Daily Candy readers since their inception. So, we were obviously v excited to be included.

The post went up on Sunday and we were immediately inundated with messages from designers of all stripes and feathers. We finally settled on two sustainably minded collections: Flea Bags and Cri De Coeur shoes. The day went by almost too quickly and we can’t wait to host our next OC in April. Below is a summary of our afternoon appointments. Please, do, take the time to click through to these gals sites. Their work never ceases to inspire and amaze us!

Jennifer Barrack, Radiant Element Designs
Jennifer’s career in fashion began on the fast track. When she was still in college in Philadelphia, she was tapped for a 6 month internship with Marc Jacobs. Upon graduation, she continued her studies in fashion design overseas in London, England. Jennifer’s knack for working with sumptuous bohemian textiles thoroughly charmed us. We’ve asked her to come back to us with a sampling of pieces from her summer collection in a few weeks, so this wont be the last you’ll hear from her! Stay tuned.

Keeno Calder Clothing
Abby O’Sullivan, the designer behind Keen O Calder, has worn a number of equally fascinating fashion hats. A costumer designer by trade, Abby has created burlesque outfits for LES club, The Box, and styled the heroine of Oscar nominated flick, Frozen River. O’Sullivan’s Fall collection centered around a crushed velvet material, which she shaped into a number of appealing frocks and rompers. Camilla and I both had major girl crushes on her look book model, who added the perfect touch of rocker girl nonchalance to the pieces.

Emma Caroll
Emma Carroll’s founders Matt and Emma are newlyweds who first met on a European train trip. Oh, livin’ the Before Sunrise dream! Their line draws on “traditional leather craft techniques” and uses only the finest Italian leathers. However, their palette and sensibility is modern and fun. We loved Emma’s new geometric headbands and pin sets! Emma, (even though she didn’t say so in the appointment) keeps a fantastic blog, which I highly recommend you checking out! blog

Cri de Coeur
One of our Daily Candy entrants, Cri de Coeur creates handbags and footwear that are both sassy and leather free. The owner, Gina Ferraraccio, is a no-cheat vegan and committed to upholding ethical, environmentally sustainable practices within her company. Camilla and I loved this gorgeous stacked heel.

Flea Bags
Shira Entis and Alex Bell met at Brown University 10 years ago. The two started Flea Bags out of a desire to create a market tote bag that was as chic as it was eco-friendly. Their bags are lightweight, durable and come with the Edition Number written on each bag. The fashion world is starting to take note as well! By the time the girls came in, we had already seen their work in this months Lucky and Marie Claire.

Mary Savel
Mary Savel designs out of her studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Camilla and I were swooning over Ms. Savel’s flirty florals and a gorgeous red ikat number.

Hunter NY

Hunter NY launched this past Summer in ’09 by Jennifer and David. The business partners are stylists by day and jewelry designers by night! Their line includes affordable necklaces, bracelets, pins and cuffs. Most of their pieces retail under $100. We especially loved their well thought out display cases, a mixture of diy projects and Moon River Chattel scores.

Clay Couture

Eva Lopez, our last appointment of the day, is a friend of a current T & C designer Nissa Rasmussen. Eva’s clay beads are combined with semi precious gems to create intresting necklaces that feel tactile and special. When Eva’s not moonlighting as designer, she teaches a class of 5th grade students in Long Island City!

That’s all for now cheris. We’ll be updating you with our final decisions next week. In the meantime, I hope to see all of you at our Valentines Day Soiree this Friday. No joke; Rand and I wanted to pick up each and every collection that came through our door yesterday. Sadly, there’s a limit to our little store’s shelf space, so next week we’ll post the Open Callers whose work you’ll be able to find in the coming months at T&C. That said, let the recap begin!

Andrea Cobb

Andrea Cobb, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence, was our first appointment. Her sterling silver pieces are all carved in wax before casting, and are influenced by Art Nouveau and organic shapes. We especially liked her ‘Plant Wrap Ring,’ which Andrea was sporting herself!

Payal Luthra

Payal Luthra, a Fort Greene resident and Harvard Architecture school graduate, brought us beautiful gingham scarves from India. Hand-embroidered rosettes (deceivingly simple but highly labor intensive!) adorn these gauzelike spring wraps. All the work is done in India, from where Payal’s family hails. Up next? Embroidered cashmere scarves—we can’t wait!

Hello Robertson

Hannah Robertson, one half of Hello Robertson (partner Kelly Reynolds wasn’t able to make it) brightened up our white center table with her beautiful, multi-colored hair accessories. Hair pins and alice bands are offered in myriad colorways and patterns—many of which are sourced from vintage fabrics and upholstery. Hello Robertson guarantees the icing on any outfit.

Shenan

Shenan Fraguadas, the fashion forward mastermind behind Shenan Fashion Design, brought us her Spring 2010 and Fall 2010 collections. We swooned over her floral tunics, washed silk harem pants, and light as linen cotton crop tanks for Spring, and definitely pondered having T&C go a little goth for fall when we saw her “Reaper Hoodie” (picture: black zip up sweatshirt with reaper like hood).

Alessandra Olanow

Illustrator Alessandra Olanow had a eureka moment when she saw her friend’s camera slung over his shoulder, on top his own tote bag. All of her images are hand drawn by Alessandra herself before they’re silk-screened onto the nude or black twill totes. We like the camera and New York Sometimes images best. Also very noteworthy: Alessandra is coming out with her own letterpress line based on her illustrations! She’s been commissioned by couples to do thank you notes for their wedding, as well as business cards and other ephemera. Too cute!

LauLau NYC

Hawaiian born, Greenpoint-based handbag designer Michele Lau has a roster of high-profile internships under her belt (hello? Philip Lim, Samantha Pleet, and recent Gen Art nominee Sophomore) and is now ready to break out on her own. Her denim and canvas tie up and tote bags are the perfect spring accessory, but will also stay on trend season after season.

Andrea Corson

A former sculptor, Andrea Corson uses lost wax casting to create her one of a kind line—almost every piece is individual. We were immediately drawn to her signature line, the Caviar collection—specifically to a heavy ring in almost urchin-like form. In her Links Collection, no two links are the same. This is an amazing thing to stumble upon, now that much of the jewelry is mass market and machine made.

Carrie Biblo Art Jewelry

Recent Pratt graduate, and recent nominee for a Niche award, Carrie Bilbo created her senior thesis jewelry collection around phobias: Entomophobia, dendrophobia, etc. She carefully preserves cicada wings and places them in shakers handmade from antique watch glass. We were particularly taken with her tree branch hair ornaments—so pretty for any time of day!

Rand will pick up with you later on for the apres lunch set!

Thanks to all the designers for making the trek out to Fort Greene to show us their wares! We really appreciate it!

But I did come across these delightfully pretty confections today on my wanderings into the blogosphere.

Aren’t these Marcie Blaine chocolates just, well, edible?! I like the patterning she adds to a simple truffle, as well as the handmade quality of the shape of the chocolates themselves. Perfectly imperfect, one might say.

I promise we’ll let you in on all of our V Day trunkshow details as soon as everyone is confirmed!

But something about this spread in now defunct (tear) design mag, Domino, makes me a little green with envy. It’s the well documented Park Slope brownstone of Jenna Lyons, creative director at J. Crew . I think Jenna did well choosing Levenson McDavid Architects, no? Coincidence: they were actually the architects for Carlton Mews, the currently abandoned co-housing project next door to my house. If Zach allows me to bring an architect in to redo our house sometimes soon (read: never), I think I’ll play copycat and get them on board.

In any case, I’ve chosen these Domino mag pics rather than the September 2009 pics from the spread in Living Etc. I just liked them better.

Can we talk about that bathroom for a minute? Ohmygoodness it is beyond gorgeous. I’m adverse to dark bathrooms, but the gigantic window and stark whiteness of the bathtub’s interior give it a lightness usually unattainable with a paint job like that. It’s so romantical.
